Description

Scope of Position:
The Peter L. Slavin, MD Academy for Applied Learning in Health Care seeks a senior educational scientist to serve as Director of Health Professions Education at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Reporting to the MGH Chief Learning Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting and advancing educational scholarship across a busy academic medical center. This is a full-time leadership and research position supported by institutional funds. The successful candidate will work with a wide range of clinician educators and investigational teams across the health professions. Applicants should have a doctoral degree and broad experience in educational research, and will be eligible for appointment to the faculty at Harvard Medical School. Teaching and research opportunities are also available in collaboration with MGH Institute of Health Professions (an interprofessional graduate school founded by Mass General).

Specific activities include:

  • Lead and manage an educational scholarship team as part of the new Slavin Academy for Applied Learning in Health Care, with a focus on development of an interprofessional research unit dedicated to scholarship in the learning sciences.
  • Mentor health care educators and investigators interested in planning and pursuing educational research, including expert consultation with faculty, staff, trainees, and students regarding scholarship in the learning sciences.
  • Collaborate with health care educators and investigators on the design and implementation of education research, with a focus on supporting methodology, data collection/instruments, statistical analysis, and outcomes assessment.
  • Conduct workshops and courses on educational research methodology, including consultation on IRB processes, statistics, and publishing.
  • Apply for and support efforts to secure intramural and extramural funding for studies and programs.
  • Publish and present educational research in peer-reviewed forums.
  • Develop strong working relationships with collaborators and maintain positive communication.


Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree and experience in Educational Science, Statistics, Outcomes Research, Psychometrics, Human Factors, Psychology or other related/relevant field with an emphasis on quantitative analysis or psychometrics. Experience with qualitative methods desirable. Demonstrated ability to publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals 
  • Exceptional time management, organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet project deadlines.
  • Must be accessible and flexible with superlative interpersonal skills that permit him/her to work independently as well as in a team environment, to establish credibility with staff at all levels and of different disciplines and backgrounds, and to be persuasive in both one-to-one and group settings.
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in sharing of information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to mentor clinical faculty and staff across the health professions.
