The Concept:
Western Governors University is a competency-based online university representing the strategic educational interests of the governors of 19 participating states and territories. WGU offers competency-based degrees at a distance to dispersed students and lifelong learners, utilizing distance education courses from leading universities, colleges, and corporations. Customized academic programs are mentored by faculty and delivered via the Internet. WGU has enrolled students from all 50 states, 3 territories, and 9 countries.

Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming. The governors are the members of the WGU Corporation. Governor Huntsman (UT) and Governor Ritter (CO) currently serve on the WGU Board of Trustees.

Accreditation:
WGU is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). WGU Teachers College is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
