Company Profile
Company Overview
Pearson Educational Measurement (PEM) has been a trusted partner in district, state and national assessments for more than 50 years. As a pioneer and the largest comprehensive provider of educational assessment products, services and solutions, PEM helps states, school districts, teachers and parents support standards-based reform while using testing and assessment to promote learning and academic achievement.
Company History
In 2003, Pearson Educational Measurement celebrated its 50th anniversary. Founded by the University of Iowa in 1953 as the Measurement Research Center, assessment pioneer E.F. Lindquist developed the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) technology and data collection services that are used for scoring assessments in the K-12 and post-secondary education sectors. This revolutionary technology greatly expanded the use, accuracy, and speed of educational testing, and supported new directions for educational reform in the 1950s and 1960s.
In 1968, Westinghouse Learning Corporation purchased the Iowa City operations. For more than a decade, Westinghouse set the industry standard in educational testing, scoring, data reporting and financial aid administration.
National Computer Systems (NCS) acquired Westinghouse in 1983, and continued to enhance the operation as the industry leader in educational testing by providing high-quality services to the education community.
In 2000, Pearson bought NCS to combine its curriculum content with assessment, systems, and data management enterprises. Today, as Pearson Educational Measurement, a proud tradition is carried on with proven, high-quality assessment services, including program management, software systems design, performance assessment scoring, test development, and paper and electronic test delivery, processing and reporting. With experience, innovation, and dedication, Pearson Educational Measurement works tirelessly to build strong partnerships with educational leaders to help them succeed in the new education environment.
