Company Overview

From historic Carver Hall, across the park-like Academic Quadrangle and rising to Redman Stadium, home of the Huskies, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania embodies its heritage, its commitment to students and its winning attitude.

Founded in 1839 as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute, Bloomsburg University is a four-year, public university located in north-central Pennsylvania, a 90-minute drive north of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s capital, and adjacent to the charming Town of Bloomsburg and its 12,000 residents. Also known as “BU,” Bloomsburg University is one of 14 members of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and, with its sister institutions, shares an early history of teacher education as a State Normal School.

BU gained university status in 1983 and today offers a wide array of undergraduate majors in the arts and humanities, sciences, education, health care and business through its four colleges: Professional Studies, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology. Students may pursue master’s degrees in various fields and a doctor of clinical audiology degree through the School of Graduate Studies.

At Bloomsburg University, all classes are taught by faculty, most holding terminal degrees in their fields of expertise; there are no teaching assistants. Accreditations from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the prestigious Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and others attest to the high quality of a BU education. Consistently ranked among top universities in the annual U.S. News and World Report listing, BU takes pride in the student success reflected in its 81 percent retention rate (the percentage of freshmen who return for additional years of study) and 62 percent six-year graduation rate.

About 90 percent of BU’s 8,000 students hail from Pennsylvania with the largest number of out-of-state students coming from neighboring New Jersey. Nearly 60 percent of the student population is female, and 10 percent of students are considered non-traditional.

What draws these students to Bloomsburg University? Many use the words “challenging,” “exciting” and “welcoming” to describe a vibrant university community that fosters learning. At BU, students enjoy personal attention, form life-long friendships and find security in an extended family of caring people. The faculty are dedicated teacher-scholars committed to student learning and success. They use the latest technology for teaching and learning on a campus where student wellbeing is safeguarded through measures such as a text message emergency notification system.

Outside of the classroom, students are involved in more than 160 student organizations, and they may take advantage of a full spectrum of support services. They enjoy the natural beauty of BU’s 282-acre campus, including the Academic Quadrangle surrounded by major academic buildings, the student services center and the library. And they cheer on the Huskies at Redman Stadium and other upper campus athletic facilities, where students compete in 18 intercollegiate athletic programs.

More than 50,000 living alumni worldwide retrace their successful professional lives to the solid foundation they received at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Notable BU alumni include former Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker, U.S. Rep. Tim Holden, State Reps. Phyllis Mundy and David Millard, actor Jimmi Simpson, former National Basketball Association coach Chuck Daly, Make-A-Wish Foundation President David Williams, WABC-TV President Rebecca Funk Campbell and New Orleans Saints offensive guard Jahri Evans.
