Company Overview
The Association of American Medical Colleges is a nonprofit association of medical schools, teaching hospitals, and academic as well as professional medical faculty societies. The Association seeks to improve the nation's health by enhancing the effectiveness of academic medicine. Our mission is to assist academic medicine's institutions, organizations, and individuals in three main mission areas: medical education, medical research, and patient care.
The AAMC’s full-time staff of 400 is based in Washington, D.C., and is divided into several offices and divisions, from member services to governmental relations to biomedical and health sciences research. Company History
Founded in 1876 to work for reform in medical education, the AAMC originally represented only medical schools. Today we represent:
the 125 accredited U.S. medical schools
the 17 accredited Canadian medical schools
nearly 400 major teaching hospitals, including 98 affiliated health systems and 68 Veterans Affairs medical centers
96 academic and professional societies, representing 109,000 faculty members
the nation's 67,000 medical students and 104,000 residents
