Company Overview

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is a small non-profit organization responsible for the certification and recertification of surgeons in the United States. The Board office is located in downtown Philadelphia, PA. There are currently 17 staff members at the ABS, including four surgeons, three IT staff, and a psychometrician. The Board is interested in expanding it’s services and capabilities in psychometrics and data analysis.
The ABS offers certification programs in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, Hand Surgery, and Hospice & Palliative Care. ABS examinations in all areas are offered for initial certification (written and oral), recertification/maintenance of certification, and In-Training examinations (for residents). The Board is funded entirely by examination fees. The Board maintains a rich database related to the surgical certification and recertification examinations. In addition, the Board is currently involved in an extensive curriculum development project designed to address the needs for surgical training in the United States.

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge. The ABS certifies surgeons in the fields of general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, surgery of the hand, and hospice and palliative medicine. The ABS is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
