Description

The SERP Institute, a non-profit education research and development organization, seeks a literacy specialist to join a team working across multiple literacy-related projects. Specific responsibilities will be assigned to team members based on interest and expertise, and will include some or all of the following:  

Roles and responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with the project director and other team members to support implementation of the Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI) in grades 6-8 
  • Develop additional curriculum materials, including student and teacher STARI materials for high school grades, and fluency passages that are age-appropriate for middle and high schoolers but written at low levels of readability
  • Schedule and lead observations of STARI instruction 
  • Conduct surveys and interviews of classroom-, school-, and district-level stakeholders about their experiences with STARI
  • Monitor implementation, including collecting data about instructional pacing, professional learning completion, and fidelity and quality of implementation; collaborate with project team and school and district staff to create and implement actionable next steps in response to these data  
  • Develop and adapt resources as needed to support adoption and implementation of STARI
  • Prepare communications and set up meetings with state, district, and school stakeholders in partner states and other potential STARI sites in order to scale STARI more broadly
  • Conduct outreach and field inquiries about STARI from districts and schools nationally
  • Provide support for the project director and other SERP staff as required


Requirements

Minimum qualifications include a Masters’ degree or higher in reading, literacy or a related field OR successful teaching experience in secondary literacy. 

Excellent communication skills in written and oral language are critical. Success in the SERP environment requires dedication to bridging the worlds of research, practice, and design, flexibility in the kinds of tasks one is willing to take on, and a willingness to work respectfully with people in universities, schools, and other organizations.

Preferred qualifications include experience with curriculum development and grant writing.

SERP provides the option of remote work when feasible; however, location in the Washington D.C. region is preferred for purposes of school visits.
