Language Acquisition and Multilingual Education
Location: University of Notre Dame
Open Date: Nov 19, 2025
Deadline: Dec 12, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
Description: The Institute for Education Initiatives (IEI) at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for an open-rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full) non-tenure track faculty position specializing in language acquisition and/or multilingual education. This is a full time, 12-month appointment with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
This faculty member will hold the appropriate rank as either a teaching professor or professor of the practice. Either designation will allow for significant contributions to the academic life of undergraduate and graduate students through courses on language acquisition and multilingual education, advancing knowledge in the field more generally, and contributing service to the Institute as well as an array of programs in service to the needs of language learners in schools.
This position will be affiliated with the Alliance for Catholic Education's (ACE) ALMA (Advancing Latino and Multilingual Learner Achievement through Catholic Education) Initiative, the English as a New Language (ENL) program, and likely the Education, Schooling, and Society (ESS) undergraduate minor/supplementary major, and the ACE Teaching Fellows M.Ed. program. These affiliations will support the mission to advance the full academic and cultural benefit of linguistically and culturally diverse students, particularly those in Catholic schools.
Among the programmatic and research opportunities available to this faculty position are two concentrated areas of focus in the Institute: educator formation and school transformation. The central academic feature of ALMA is the English as a New Language (ENL) program, an 18-credit graduate licensure program committed to fostering an environment where culturally and linguistically diverse students may thrive. The ENL program employs a threefold approach that engages schools, leaders, and teachers to cultivate a deep understanding of second language acquisition, implement research-based instructional strategies, and foster culturally sustaining classrooms within the context of Catholic schooling. Other initiatives at the school level focus on building leaders to support language learners as well as building systems related to dual-language immersion schools.
Based on the candidate's expertise, additional opportunities may exist with the M.Ed. program-a two-year, pre-service, alternative certification and formation program for teachers in Catholic schools-and the ESS program. ESS is an interdisciplinary supplementary major and minor that examines the complex role of education in human learning as well as its relationship with society, culture, politics, and the economy. The ESS program adopts a liberal arts perspective, leveraging fields such as Political Science, History, and Sociology to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of education both within and beyond the traditional classroom setting. Its core purpose is to explore fundamental questions, including the overarching purpose of education, the causes of inequitable educational opportunities, and schooling's contribution to the development of citizens and a just society.
In addition to the graduate and undergraduate teaching responsibilities, this faculty position will help advance the research profile of the Institute with relation to multilingual learners and language acquisition. Particularly as the Institute has made a recent investment in advancing educational research and action, this role will help advance our understanding of serving language learners with unique opportunities to draw on a large corpus of data from the Institute's degree and non-degree granting programs.
